Vitamin B12 & Folate Panel
What This Test Measures
Combined B12 and folate measurement; complete assessment of these related vitamins.
Preparation
Serum B12: unreliable if supplementing — the B12 Society recommends 4 months free of all B12 supplements AND fortified foods for true baseline. MMA and homocysteine are more reliable markers of functional B12 status during supplementation. For serum folate: fast 8+ hours (eating falsely elevates results). RBC folate is preferred for long-term status. The STTM community targets B12 in the upper quarter of range and folate in the top third. For MTHFR patients, both should be monitored closely.
